Watch: Mundy Performs His Awesome Hit “July” @ Trinity College, Ireland
This song by Mundy is very catchy — extremely popular throughout Ireland — yet, I doubt more than a half-dozen people in America have ever even heard it. It’s really shocking how so much great music across the world remains local, and never gets ushered onto the world stage. What a waste…
Mundy’s own independent label, Camcor Records, released this amazing song on his 2002 album 24 Star Hotel. I stumbled upon it while in Ireland sometime around the mid-point of this decade. My wife and I were loading up with Irish music at a small CD store in Dingle to keep our car stereo humming along with tunes that might compliment the beautiful Irish countryside all around us, and — low and behold — halfway through The Definitive Irish Folk Collection Vol.2 this Mundy song jumped out of our speakers. Well, I’ll just say that it got a lot of play over those couple weeks. You’ll see from the crowd participation just how popular this song is in the Emerald Isle.
Here is Mundy performing “July” and then a great rendition of Harry Nilsson’s “Everybody’s Talkin,” on Rag Week’s opening night — 2008 — at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Enjoy!:

Watch: The La’s Perform “There She Goes” On David Letterman – 1991
Here’s an old favorite of mine by Liverpudlian group, The La’s . I was fortunate to have seen these guys play live twice — once at the Town & Country in London, England (early 1991) and again the following year at a festival in the Washington, DC area. They’ve got a great sense of melody– singer Lee Mavers has a real Beatlesque feel to his songwriting — and they put on an excellent live show. I was expecting huge things from them then, but they unfortunately disbanded sometime after their first album.
In 1999, Sixpence None The Richer covered ‘There She Goes’ which became that band’s second hit single.
I personally have always preferred The La’s original version. Here they are live in 1991, making their American television debut on the David Letterman Show. Enjoy!:

Watch: Iggy Pop Does “The Passenger” Live in 1977
Iggy Pop’s contribution to punk is sometimes discounted in the annals of music history, but just for the record: Iggy Pop was MOST DEFINITELY the first punk, at least in the way the music and style of the genre was defined in the 1970s. Generally, that honor gets bestowed upon bands like The Ramones, The […]
Watch: Groove Armada Perform ‘Superstylin’ LIVE At Brixton Academy 2002
Grammy-nominated single ‘Superstylin’ is one of my favorite dance club ‘Big Beat’ tracks — definitely my favorite Groove Armada track. Behind the heavy bass, and awesome melody is some powerful Jamaican-style toasting. It’s something between dance-hall reggae and a heavy rave/club tune. Truly hypnotic — the kind of song that will fuel your gym workouts, […]
Watch: From 1980 — Boomtown Rats Perform Hit ‘Banana Republic’
Here’s a fabulous song by Bob Geldof’s old band — from Dublin, Ireland — The Boomtown Rats. For those unfamiliar with this track, it’s got a great reggae-infused melody that will leave you humming it over and over again, all day and night. Songs like these make me miss the 80s something terrible: Enjoy!: […]
Watch: Lily Allen Does Her Pop — Reggae Hit, ‘Smile’
I understand this song was a hit in the UK/Europe, and as a result Lily Allen is pretty big there. For some reason it didn’t happen here, and therefore most Americans aren’t too familiar with Allen or this song. The song ‘Smile’ from her album Alright, Still has got a great melody — pop / […]
Watch: Paul Weller Covers Sister Sledge’s “Thinking of You”
Probably no artist has left as big a mark on my adolescent years as Paul Weller. From huge Jam fan / Style Council fan — to playing in bands heavily influenced by his writing. There’s probably millions of those who share similar stories as mine across the Atlantic, but over here in America, I’d guess […]
Great Dance Track – “Don’t Take it Personal” by Wahoo
There’s a lot of great music falling by the wayside these days. Here’s a cool dance track that — okay, I’m gonna venture out onto this limb, here — is virtually unknown in America. Apparently, it’s gotten a bit of play in dance clubs around Europe. Gilles Peterson — master Brit DJ / music purveyor […]
Watch: Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros “Tony Adams”
In the name of disclosure, I’ll just say that The Clash are one of my all-time favorite bands. I sense that quite a few out there have shied away from Joe Strummer’s post-Clash efforts. For those of you who loved The Clash, but haven’t yet delved into this part of Strummer’s career, a word to […]
